Update to WordPress 2.3 today!

The new version of WordPress is out – always an exciting time! Caution should be taken with this one though – there has been some pretty big changes behind the scenes in the database structure, which replaces the categories, post2cat, and link2cat tables with three new tables that are more flexible. Therefore you may find that some of your plugins don’t work anymore.

Noted new features

- New tagging support for content.

- URL cleanup, which is being called ‘Canonical URLs’ which ‘does things like enforce your no-www preference, redirect posts with changed slugs so a link never goes bad, redirect URLs that get cut off in emails on similar to the correct post, and much more’. This is of great importance for SEO!

- New ‘Pending Review’ feature.

- Finally sorted the Advanced WYSIWYG features, no more silly ’secret’ keyboard shortcuts to reveal the advanced features!

- Numerous code optimisation areas, including using the new jQuery which is ‘800% faster’ in some areas…cool!

As always, remember to backup your files before applying the upgrade!

I’ve had to upgrade a few plugins to get 2.3 working perfectly – especially my Google Sitemaps plugin.
